Of course, being a cinematic trailer, this is not direct gameplay. So far, the gameplay looks to be quite fluid with Frey’s traversal, which again is something highlighted in the cinematic trailer. Now to find a way back home, Frey Holland begins her journey exploring Athia, meeting survivors, and aiding them in their fight. Instead, Frey has gained new supernatural powers to help her quickly traverse the planet and deliver powerful attacks against those that intend to harm her. While Frey is unfamiliar with this world, she’s tossed into it with nothing to her advantage. A plague has spread, causing wicked beasts to roam the world while sorcerers force survivors into oppression. While Athia was originally a bountiful world that flourished with life and peace, it has since gone into ruins. Frey is originally from New York City, but one day she is magically transported into a different unusual world called Athia. If you haven’t been following the development of Forspoken, this is an action RPG that follows a young woman named Frey Holland.
Overall, we’re looking at Frey from two different perspectives: back home in New York City and in Athia. Additionally, you can check out the latest footage released for the marketing of Forspoken in the video we have embedded above. This trailer is relatively short, but it follows the basic premise we know so far about Forspoken. Players will get a new fluid action RPG, and to help showcase more of that fluid action we can expect when the game launches is a new cinematic trailer.

Again, hopefully the rest of the game is not as bad as this voiced-over clip, but something about how the game has handled its lead and concept (a modern woman is suddenly thrust into a world of spells and monsters) does not seem to be landing, even if gameplay continues to look rather excellent. This is not an ideal situation for actress Ella Balinska, who is being saddled with what appears like it’s not going to be the best of scripts as the lead of this game, shortly after her turn on a different sort of video game project, the critic-and-audience lambasted Resident Evil series on Netflix. But rather like it’s a parody of the worst kind of action dialogue in media at the moment.
Not just like, someone’s writing a clunky script that gets mistranslated in localization. There’s a common notion that most Square Enix games just do not have great writing in general, but this feels like a different kind of bad. The superpowered magic-wielding combat actually seems pretty fantastic, and no amount of bad scripting will probably turn me away from playing, but it’s not great to have to deal with. It’s frustrating to hear dialogue this bad from Forspoken, given that everything I’ve actually seen from gameplay continues to look absolutely stunning.
